Hey everyone,
So today I finally started class at the university of Otago! I don't think I've ever been more excited to go to school in my entire life. I'm pretty ecstatic - call me nerdy but it's true. Also, it's sunny today and I received Nana's brownies in the mail this morning so those could be contributing to my great mood!
Today I had 2 classes, which both seem like they will be pretty interesting - Politics, Policy, and Global Media and Negotiation and Dispute Resolution. Right now I'm enrolled in 5 classes (which is normal for back home) but I'm going to drop one and take 4 because I only need to take 4 and everyone here thinks taking 5 is crazy - most people take 3! Plus this way it will be easier to do what I want and travel on weekends! I went around campus today in my free time and took a bunch of pictures with my new camera so I will post some when I can. It is definitely a nice campus and I can see myself lying on the grass by the river and reading on sunny days.
I'm trying to figure out what I want to get involved in here - there is no swim team (or pool for that matter) so that is out, but I joined fitness for fun so I can go to as many fitness classes this semester as I want (which are a really good workout!). I think I'll also join the tramping club (they go on weekend hiking and camping trips). It seems really fun and a lot of international students (and Canadians) do it! Yesterday I hiked up Mt Cargill (which I think is the highest mountain in Dunedin) with them and it was awesome - great views, good workout and fun to do with a big group of people! I was also thinking about joining the kayaking club - I went out to the beginner session on Saturday, which was fun but freezing! They made us flip to make sure we knew how to get out of the kayak safely (this is not sea kayaking, it is extreme kayaking through rapids and over waterfalls...). I didn't have the proper clothing though so I froze, but it was also really shallow and I cut my thumb on a rock! Sooo I think I might pass on the kayaking club - more because I think I could get what I wanted out of it from the tramping club and also I'll only have time for so much. It's also kind of scary and intense to be honest. Anyways that is all for now - I'll be back on soon to post some pictures!
